Trinità d'Agultu e Vignola

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 2,155 · Postal code: 07038

The historic name of this stretch of Gallura is Vignolas, and it still appeared as such in the official documents of the Kingdom of Sardinia in the eighteenth century; the coast, meanwhile, was watched from the Spanish tower of Isola Rossa, raised in the sixteenth. The village itself is young: it formed in the second half of the nineteenth century around a country church, peopled by families from Tempio Pausania and Santa Teresa Gallura, from the Anglona and from the nearby shepherds' farmsteads, with a good number of Genoese and Tuscans who had come to burn charcoal. It has been an independent municipality only since 1958.

The best story here, though, is a small archaeological mystery. In 1926, digging the road meant to link Aggius with Trinità, workmen found at Lu Tuvu a cauldron full of Roman coins of the republican age. They split it among themselves at once, as one might expect. Only some time later did the archaeologist Antonio Taramelli hear of the find and manage to recover about twenty of the coins, datable from 200 to 2 before Christ: of the rest of the hoard nothing more has ever been heard.
