Valledoria

Province: Sassari · Region: Sardinia · Population: 4,091 · Postal code: 07039

Valledoria has 4,091 inhabitants and looks out over the Gulf of Asinara, in the Anglona, where the Coghinas reaches the sea; the traditional name of the village is Codaruina, from the Latin coda and ruina, that is the edge of the ruins of ancient Ampurias. Throughout the Middle Ages that city held a bishop's see, also known as Flumen, which on its decline was transferred to the royal city of Castel Aragonese, today Castelsardo.

In the second half of the thirteenth century the Anglona passed to the Doria, a Genoese family that held most of the old Giudicato of Torres; with the Aragonese conquest the territory became a fief of the Centelles, who also bore the title of counts of Coghinas. Wars and plagues emptied the area, which recovered from the second half of the eighteenth century with settlers coming from Aggius and Tempio Pausania. An autonomous comune since 1960, Valledoria saw the frazione of Santa Maria Coghinas break away in 1983; today the mouth of the Coghinas is one of the flat-water stretches most crowded with kitesurfers.
