Saint Sebastian and the Is Clamoris Nuragic Spring
📅 Every year, on 20 January
Escalaplano celebrates Saint Sebastian on 20 January, in the church dedicated to him.
What is known about Escalaplano, which sits at three hundred and thirty-eight metres on its plateau, is above all the chain of hands it passed through, and the chain is a precise one. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Judicate of Cagliari, in the curatoria of Siurgus; when the judicate fell, in 1258, it went to the judges of Arborea, and from them to Pisa, which received it by testament in 1295 but only took real possession of it in 1300. With the Aragonese conquest it passed to the Aragonese, and in 1363 Peter IV the Ceremonious placed it in the county of Quirra, granted in fief to Berengario Carroz.
In 1604 it was annexed to the duchy of Mandas, and when that house died out, in 1617, the fief went to the Zuñiga, dukes of Béjar; in 1777 it passed to the Maza and then to the Tellez-Giron, from whom the village bought itself out in 1839, with the end of the feudal system. Among so many owners, the only date that concerns the inhabitants rather than the masters is 1652 or thereabouts, when an outbreak of plague sharply reduced the population. Much further back stand the domus de janas and the nuraghi scattered across the territory.
