Feast of Saint Ignatius of Loyola
📅 Every year, on 31 July
On 31 July Musei, a municipality of 1,522 inhabitants in Sud Sardegna, celebrates its patron Saint Ignatius of Loyola (sant'Ignazio di Loyola).
The village as it stands today was made by the Jesuits. In the sixteen hundreds the Society of Jesus, which had come into possession of the fief, built here the late-baroque church and the convent of Sant'Ignazio di Loyola, and around them the houses gathered: that is how the settlement was born. At that time the place was not called Musei but Villa di Prato. The Jesuits stayed until 1773; then the fief went back to the Crown, was given out to lords again in 1785, and in 1839 the village bought itself free with the abolition of feudalism.
Before the Jesuits, the list of owners reads like an account book. In 1336 the king of Aragon gave Musei in fief to Arnaldo Massa; in 1350 it passed to the Carroz, and from them to the Cardona, who took it in settlement of a debt. A descendant of the Cardona, Beatrice, sold it to a man of Iglesias, and one of her sons bought it back. Then it went to Adriana Carbonell, and later to Elena Rossellón, and from her to Monserrato Rossellón, and from him, precisely, to the Jesuits. The village lies in the plain of the Cixerri, on the old road between Iglesias, the lower Campidano and Cagliari: the land is fertile thanks to that river, and it keeps nuraghi and Punic and Roman remains.
