Saint George, patron of Siliqua
📅 Every year, on 23 April
Siliqua celebrates Saint George on 23 April.
Siliqua has 3,997 inhabitants in the valley of the Cixerri, and the name comes from the Latin siliqua, the pod, the carob; in Campidanese the same word means a segment. Above the village, on a hill declared a natural monument, stands the castle of Acquafredda, which takes its name from the spring that rises up there. It appears on the municipal coat of arms, and it is the monument of the town.
The castle was built by the Lacon-Massa marquises, the last judges of Cagliari; when the giudicato fell in 1258 it passed to the Pisan della Gherardesca, the family of that count Ugolino whom Dante puts in the thirty-third canto of the Inferno. Acquafredda was part of a chain of fortresses that could see one another: Gioiosaguardia at Villamassargia, Baratuli between Monastir and Ussana, San Michele at Cagliari. In 1785 it was redeemed by Victor Amadeus III of Savoy. Since 1872 the village has had its station on the line to Iglesias.
