Nuraminis

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 2,606 · Postal code: 09024

The name comes from far back: in a document of 1341 the village is de Noramine, and the pre-Roman Sardinian root nur, nurra, means a chasm, a cracking of the ground, a well-shaped ravine. In the Middle Ages Nuraminis was the chief town of the curatoria of the same name, in the judicate of Cagliari. Below the limestone rise of Sa Kòrona lies the nuragic settlement of Santa Maria, guarded by four nuraghi set all around it.

The municipal coat of arms was not invented: it copies a fragment of Byzantine marble from the second half of the tenth century, reused as building material in the facade of the parish church. Two birds face each other, recognisable as ravens, the left one with a leaf in its beak, and between them a Greek cross patty. The council chose it in 1987 and the arms were granted in 1990: a piece of wall turned into the emblem of a village.
