Saint Peter the Apostle, patron of the domus de janas
📅 Every year, on 29 June
Monastir celebrates Saint Peter the Apostle on 29 June.
Monastir has 4,505 inhabitants in the Campidano, along the axis that has always led from Cagliari towards the north of the island. Two explanations circulate about the name, and both speak of travel: Catalan, in which the word means monastery, since the medieval settlement was founded by Camaldolese monks, and the Sardinian muristèni, which denotes the places where wayfarers stopped and took on supplies. The territory keeps the domus de janas of Monte Oladiri and Monte Zara, the nuraghe Su Cuccumeu and the ruins of the castle of Baratuli.
In the age of the giudicati Monastir belonged to the Giudicato of Cagliari, in the curatoria of Parte Olla; when that fell, it passed to Arborea, and in 1295 Mariano II ceded it to the Republic of Pisa. With the Aragonese conquest it entered the Kingdom of Sardinia, and in 1455 the villa was sold to the merchant Pietro Bellit: a descendant of his, Lodovico, was made a baron, and from then on the village bore the title of barony. Redemption from the last feudal lord came in 1839, with the abolition of the feudal system.
