Sant'Anna Arresi

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 2,712 · Postal code: 09010

Arresi means fox in Campidanese Sardinian, and the name of the animal was joined to that of the saint. The village is recent: after centuries of abandonment caused by Barbary raids, at the end of the eighteenth century farmers and shepherds came back to settle here and put up their first houses around the little country chapel of Sant'Anna, which still serves as the parish church. Around it lies the plain of the medaus, the small scattered clusters of houses typical of the Sulcis, and beyond them the lagoons and dunes of Porto Pino.

In 1984 the town council proposed a coat of arms with the eagle of the Della Gherardesca, who had ruled the district between 1250 and 1350, an ear of wheat and an olive branch: the heraldic council rejected the design, and the arms granted in 2000 carry a fox and an anchor instead. On the headland grows a wild wood of Aleppo pine found in Sardinia only here and on the island of San Pietro; in summer, in the Piazza del Nuraghe, the festival Ai confini tra Sardegna e Jazz is played.
