San Nicolò Gerrei

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 846 · Postal code: 09040

In 1861 a local notary, Michele Cappai, found along the road going down towards Ballao the base of a bronze column carrying the same inscription in three languages: Punic, Greek and Latin. The dedication is by one Cleon, a slave of the saltworks contractors, thanking the god for his health restored: Eshmun to the Phoenicians, Asclepius to the Greeks and the Romans. It is of the second century before Christ, and today it is in Turin.

The village was called Pauli Gerrei until the twenty-ninth of January 1864, and in Sardinian it still is. It was the capital of the curatoria of Gerrei; later it fell into the county of Villasalto and the marquisate of Villaclara, and for a time the feudal lords came to live here. It was redeemed in 1839, when the feudal system ended.
