Sanluri

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 8,460 · Postal code: 09025

The name of Sanluri speaks of grain. The most accepted hypothesis derives it from an older Sellori, in which lori means precisely grain: su logu de su lori, the place of the corn, which is exactly what this part of the Campidano has always been. Later the town took San Lorenzo as its patron and the name was read as his, and so it has stayed. The ground bears out the first reading: in the Punic age the settlements were extremely dense, twelve villages within six kilometres, a sign that an important centre stood here; and the Romans ran through it the road linking Cagliari to Porto Torres, that is the two ends of the island.

In 215 before Christ several historians place in the plain of Sanluri the final clash of Ampsicora's revolt: the Sardo-Punic army led by Ampsicora, by Hanno of Tharros and by Mago Barca was destroyed by the Romans, with some twenty-two thousand dead among Sardinians and Carthaginians and three thousand seven hundred taken prisoner. The place where the battle is set still carries the name of that day: Sedda de sa battalla, the saddle of the battle. Much later, in 1436, the Aragonese crown made Sanluri a viscountcy and gave it to Giovanni de Sena, and the feudal system lasted here into the nineteenth century. The pond of Sabazus, which gave the first inhabitants fish in abundance, was drained in the nineteen twenties.

Our Lady of Grace, patron of the Sa Battalla re-enactment

📅 Every year, on 31 May; late June in odd years brings the Sa Battalla re-enactment of 1409

Sanluri celebrates Our Lady of Grace on 31 May, in the parish dedicated to her. At the end of June in odd years, a historical re-enactment recalls Sa Battalla of 30 June 1409, in which the Sicilian-Catalan-Aragonese army clashed with the Sardinian-Giudicale one.
