Villanovaforru

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 681 · Postal code: 09020

Villanovaforru is a «new town», born around the twelfth century out of a deliberate plan of settlement, and it takes the second half of its name from Forru, the neighbouring village that had emptied: forru in Campidanese means oven. On the seventeenth of July 1977, in the village church, the first mass in Sardinian of modern Sardinia was celebrated.

For Saint Marina the old women grow basil on purpose: it is blessed, set beside the statue, and everyone takes a sprig of it home. Until the middle of the twentieth century nobody had heard of the village; then the nuraghe Genna Maria was excavated and in 1982 the museum opened, in a little palace that had been the monte di soccorso.
