Sardara

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 4,168 · Postal code: 09030

Sardara has 4,168 inhabitants between the Campidano plain and the first hills of the Marmilla, and it owes much to its waters: in Roman times the thermal station of Aquae Neapolitanae stood here, and the springs still feed the spa and the sanctuary of Santa Maria de is Acuas. Inside the little church of Sant'Anastasia, Byzantine in origin, a sacred well of the Nuragic age opens up: water venerated before and after Christianity, in the very same place.

Above the village stands the castle of Monreale, raised by the judges of Arborea. In 1324 prince Alfonso of Aragon sent there his wife Teresa d'Entenza, ill with malaria, with a hundred and fifty men as escort; in 1409 Guglielmo III of Narbonne took refuge in it after the defeat at Sanluri, and the following year the fortress fell into Aragonese hands. Since 2005 the Touring Club Italiano has awarded Sardara the orange flag, the mark that rewards inland small towns.
