Saint Blaise, patron of the land of the nuraghi
📅 Every year, on 3 February
Villasor celebrates Saint Blaise on 3 February, in the church dedicated to him.
The name is made of villa and sor, from the Sardinian sorris, sisters: tradition has it that the village was founded by two sisters who set up house here. In 1415 Giovanni Civalleri obtained from the archbishop of Cagliari permission to build a fortified house beside the old parish church, and the stated reason was not pirates but the raids of the Barbagia shepherds coming down from the interior. The castle drew people in, and Sorris became the chief town of its district. In 1537 Charles V made it a county, and in 1594 Philip II raised it to a marquisate.
For two centuries a company of militia cavalry was based here, and its command passed from father to eldest son in the Vaquer family: it turned out in defence of Cagliari when the French attempted a landing in 1793. The company was disbanded in 1832, and to Pietro Vaquer, who commanded it, king Charles Albert offered the rank of captain in the Cavalleggeri di Sardegna; he refused, in order to stay and look after the family lands. On the municipal coat of arms are the fortified house of the Alagon, an ear of wheat crossed by two artichokes, and a factory with a smoking chimney.
