On 6 February 1574 baron Antonino De Termini Ferreri obtained licence to settle his fief, and laid out a town on a chessboard: two axes crossing — today corso Garibaldi and via Crispi — with regular blocks around them. Many consider it the first plan of its kind in Sicily.
Ten years later, in 1584, the archpriest's church was raised and dedicated to Saint Vincent Ferrer: the founders claimed kinship with the Dominican saint, and chose him as patron. The town lies in the country between the Verdura and the Magazzolo, three kilometres from Ribera; of the baronial palace only the ground-floor bastions remain, where the stables and stores once were. There are 1,375 residents.

On 5 April Calamonaci celebrates its patron Saint Vincent Ferrer; the great August festival features the saint's procession and the «rigattiati» of the two confraternities.
