In 1874, local authorities appended "Eraclea" to the town's original medieval name of Cattolica, forging a formal link to the ancient Greek settlement of Heraclea Minoa nearby. Positioned roughly 20 kilometres northwest of Agrigento near the Platani river valley, the settlement maintains a clear connection to its ancient surroundings.
Home to nearly 4,000 residents, the municipality relies heavily on traditional agriculture. The surrounding farmland yields citrus fruits, almonds, wheat, wine, and olives, driving the local economy much as it has for generations.
