Rebuilt from the ground up in 1523 after a period of abandonment, Raffadali originally began as an Arab hamlet before becoming a fief of the Norman Montaperto family. Today, this municipality of nearly 12,800 residents sits just 10 kilometers northwest of Agrigento. Its 16th-century historic core survives, though it is now heavily surrounded by late 20th-century residential expansion.
While the local workforce has largely shifted from farming to small crafts and the service sector, the area remains synonymous with a specific crop: the Raffadali pistachio. Travelers driving through the Sicilian interior should stop to sample this agricultural specialty right at its source.
