On 6 November Montallegro celebrates Saint Leonard, the village patron.
In Sicilian the town is not called Montallegro but Angiò, and the reason is a title: its founder, a Gioeni of the princes of Petrulla, had obtained from Philip III the right to style himself duke of Anjou.
The first Montallegro stood higher up, on Monte Suso, where the ruins still are: from up there they watched the sea, and when sails appeared they lit fires — the smoke told the farmers to come back in. In the seventeenth century the town came down, and it has been here ever since, among the orange groves that fall within the Ribera DOP. There are 2,543 residents.
