Following the devastating earthquake of 1783 and a severe famine the next year, the residents of Gioiosa Guardia were forced to abandon their homes on Mount Meliuso. They migrated down to the Tyrrhenian coast to establish a new settlement, naming it Gioiosa Marea—which translates to "Joyful Tide"—to differentiate it from their lost mountain village.
Now home to 7,114 people, the municipality has evolved into a prominent tourist destination within the province of Messina. Positioned 60 kilometers west of the provincial capital and bordering towns like Patti and Piraino, it serves as a straightforward base along Sicily's northeastern shoreline.
