Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel
📅 Every year, on 28 and 29 September
On 28 and 29 September Sant'Angelo di Brolo celebrates Saint Michael the Archangel; the village is also known for the Hazelnut Festival, on 12 August.
The legend says count Roger, worn out by a whole day of battle against the Saracens, asked heaven for help: Saint Michael appeared, and the sun did not set until the enemy was beaten. In thanks he had the monastery built, and around the monastery the town was born.
The monastery, entrusted to the Basilians, dates from 1084, and for centuries its abbots were also lords of the place. The name joins the church of Sant'Angelo and the Latin brolum, the enclosed and cultivated field. Between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries silk was made here, and with silk the town reached its height: today there are salami and hazelnuts. There are 3,297 residents.
