Named Muntagnariali in Sicilian, Montagnareale stands in the Saracen mountain range along the northern Nebrodi. Home to around 1,600 residents, the municipality belongs to the Metropolitan City of Messina.
Located 50 kilometres west of Messina and 140 kilometres east of Palermo, the town shares its hill with Sorrentini, a hamlet of Patti. Its territory also borders Gioiosa Marea, Librizzi, and Sant'Angelo di Brolo.
