The name speaks of a border: from the Latin limen, because these lands lay exactly on the line between the district of Messina and that of Taormina. Others trace it to the Greek limne, marsh, for the wetlands along the Agrò.
The church of Santa Maria delle Preci dates from 1397 and stands where a synagogue once was: here, in the Judeca quarter, lived a Jewish community that had arrived centuries earlier from Egypt. In 1610 marquis Pietro Balsamo obtained licence to settle the neighbouring fief, and so Roccafiorita was born. In the eighteenth century lead and copper were mined below the town: six mines and a small foundry. There are 900 residents.
