On 19 March Godrano, a municipality of 1,153 inhabitants in the province of Palermo, celebrates its patron San Giuseppe.
On 1 October 1970 don Pino Puglisi arrived here as parish priest. Godrano was a town split by a feud that in half a century had left dozens dead; he stayed eight years, and with a group of volunteers he got people talking to each other again.
The town lies at 700 metres, at the foot of the Rocca Busambra and on the edge of the Ficuzza wood. The name is Arabic: al-Gudran was the lake that opens before it, today Scanzano. The present village was founded in the sixteenth century by Annibale Valguarnera, a little below the old one; in the wood remains the fish pond the Bourbons built to raise trout and eels. There are 1,153 residents.
