In the 17th century, the fiefdom of Ogliastro came under the rule of the Mancini family, establishing what is now Bolognetta. The town maintains a nod to its original identity through its Sicilian name, Bulugnetta or Agghiastru.
Located roughly 20 kilometres southeast of Palermo, the municipality has a population of 3,932. It shares boundaries with several neighboring communities, including Marineo, Misilmeri, Baucina, Villafrati, Ventimiglia di Sicilia, and Casteldaccia.
