On 12 September 1600, selling the fief, Vincenzo Beccadelli of Bologna asked that any town founded there be called Bolognetta. The town was founded, but it was called Santa Maria d'Ogliastro, after the wild olive that stood beside a votive chapel. The promise was kept only on 1 February 1883.
The council said it served to avoid confusion with the other Ogliastros in Italy; in the town, though, people have said the point was to erase the memory of the 'seven and a half' revolt, when in September 1866 the insurgents stormed the barracks. Bolognetta sits on the hills at 330 metres, and in its square stands the Anti-Mafia Wall. There are 3,932 residents.

On 13 June Bolognetta celebrates Saint Anthony of Padua with a procession; in summer it is repeated with the vulata di l'ancili, when two girls sing the saint's hymn suspended on two wires.
