On 23 August Campofelice di Fitalia, a municipality of 548 inhabitants in the province of Palermo, celebrates its patron San Giuseppe.
Campofelice came too late: the prince of Fitalia had the licence to found it, work began in 1811 and the first settlers moved into the houses at the start of 1814 — but meanwhile, in 1812, feudalism had been abolished, and the new town was not recognised as a comune.
For a century and a half its people governed themselves as best they could — first the prince, then themselves, then the comune of Mezzojuso — and kept asking for autonomy: it came only on 1 February 1951, by a regional law. The name speaks of the land: a happy field, and Fitalia in Greek is the land that bears fruit. There are 548 residents.
