Calatafimi-Segesta

Province: Trapani · Region: Sicily · Population: 6,938 · Postal code: 91013

In 1997, this Sicilian municipality officially appended "Segesta" to its traditional name of Calatafimi, a bureaucratic move with a profound historical purpose. The change formally acknowledged the town's stewardship over an extraordinary archaeological site, drawing attention to a territory currently home to roughly 6,900 residents in the Trapani province.

The surrounding agricultural hills are dominated by a remarkably intact Doric temple dating back to the 5th century BC. Just up an adjacent hilltop sits a 2nd-century Roman amphitheater overlooking the valleys. Arriving right at opening time offers the best chance to photograph these ancient structures before the midday tour buses arrive.
