On March 11, 1607, King Philip III of Spain formally chartered the township of Vita, established by Calatafimi nobleman Vito Sicomo. Covering just 8.88 square kilometres, it remains the smallest municipality by area in the province of Trapani, positioned at an altitude second only to Erice.
Vita supported Garibaldi’s Expedition of the Thousand in 1860, later experiencing mass emigration to Toronto in the twentieth century. Following severe destruction during the 1968 Belice earthquake, the town was rebuilt adjacent to its historic footprint, where 2,139 residents live today.
