Castellammare del Golfo

Province: Trapani · Region: Sicily · Population: 14,603 · Postal code: 91014

In 1718, a British naval strike on the harbor was purportedly halted by the miraculous arrival of the Madonna del Soccorso, a legend still commemorated with historical reenactments. Home to 14,603 residents, the settlement rises from Cala Marina, anchored by the medieval fortress that provided the town's name. Stepped alleys climb from the water toward Piazza Petrolo and Corso Garibaldi.

While fishing and viticulture formed its early economy, the municipality now focuses on coastal tourism. Sitting beneath the Monte Inici mountains, its borders encompass the Segestan thermal baths, Guidaloca bay, the sea stacks of Scopello, and the eastern gateway to the Zingaro Nature Reserve.
