Glorenza

Province: South Tyrol · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 889 · Postal code: 39020

Glurns is the smallest town in South Tyrol, and locals say it is so small that they have to go to mass outside the walls. A town since 1309, it was razed to the ground in 1499 after the battle of Calven; Maximilian I had it rebuilt and walled as a bridgehead towards the Habsburg lands across the border, and those walls, with their towers and gates, are still standing whole.

The court Maximilian installed here opened, in October 1519, the trial that made the town's name famous among lawyers: the community of Stelvio sued the voles that were wrecking its fields, and on 2 May 1520 judge Wilhelm von Haßingen ordered them to leave within a fortnight, assigning them land along the Adige.
