Tubre appears as Tuberis in 881, and all through the middle ages that name meant the whole valley. The Benedictine monastery of the valley, founded between 775 and 800, was in fact called Monasterium Tuberis, of Tubre, but it lies across the border: today it is in the Swiss comune of Müstair, just beyond the customs post at the edge of the village.
Of the first monks, the names are two thirds Latin and one third Germanic. From 881 the monastery, the castle and the lands around them, with the villages of Monastero and Tubre, went back to the bishop of Coira and were exempted from imperial taxes. Of the val Monastero only a third is in South Tyrol: the rest is in the Grisons, and in Romansh the village is called Tuer.
