Feast of Saint Walburga
📅 Every year, on 25 February
On 25 February Martello, a municipality of 879 inhabitants in the province of Bolzano, celebrates its patroness Saint Walburga, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
The Val Martello climbs from the Vinschgau for some twenty kilometres inside the Stelvio national park, following the Plima up to the glaciers of the Cevedale. The name, recorded from 1280, stays obscure: from the Latin murtella, the bilberry, from a personal name, or from the pre-Roman marra, a heap of stones. The double-headed eagle of the coat of arms, tradition says, rewarded the courage of the inhabitants at the battle of Schanzen near Coldrano.
Here grow the highest strawberries in Europe, between nine hundred and one thousand eight hundred metres, in a valley that lives on cross-country skiing in winter and hosted the junior biathlon world championships in 2007. In the census of 2011 Martello turned out to be the only Italian municipality without a single resident of Italian mother tongue; the parish church is Santa Valburga, and higher up stands Santa Maria alla Fonderia.
