Downstream of Maso Stadio there was a port on the Adige: the banks and the quays are of large squared blocks of porphyry, and some can still be seen. The Rhaetians used it in the Iron Age, then the Romans, and it silted up in the early middle ages; Etruscans, Veneti and Celts passed this way. The most famous piece, the architrave of Vadena, is in Innsbruck: on it is cut a letter nobody has yet read.
The arms, of 1969, are the geography of the comune: the ruined tower is Castel Varco, the two mounts are the Monte di Mezzo, the thin band is the motorway and the wavy one the Adige. Vadena is one of the six comuni of South Tyrol with an Italian-speaking majority: already in the census of 1880 there were three hundred and seventy-seven Italians and sixty Germans, come to farm land taken from the river.
