The name is attested as Aura in 1190, in a deed that names one Conradinus de Aura in the service of the noblemen of Egna; where it comes from is not settled — perhaps from the Latin ora, the edge, perhaps from a pre-Roman root, perhaps from a Middle High German word meaning ox. What is certain is that by the fifteenth century the place was already a community with a name of its own: a document of 1463 speaks explicitly of the comunitas ville Awer, the community of the village of Auer, and of its Riegler, the men who managed its land.
The old church of San Pietro belonged, from the Middle Ages until the early seventeenth century, to the convent of San Lorenzo in Trento, and it keeps a late Renaissance organ that still works: Hans Schwarzenbach built it in 1599. The coat of arms is that of the Khuen, who held the place from 1397 to 1690, with two crossed keys added for Saint Peter. From 1917 to 1963 the railway of the Val di Fiemme left from here for Predazzo, and the village had a second station, now disused. In 2022 two stumbling stones were laid in the streets for Martin Krebs and Ida Kaufmann, killed in the years when this land was the Operational Zone of the Alpine Foothills.
