Aldino

Province: South Tyrol · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 1,651 · Postal code: 39040

In medieval documents this village appears as in loco Aldin between 1177 and 1185, then as Alden and as Aldein, and the name probably comes from a person, a Germanic name latinised as Aldius. In 1928, however, the place name was Italianised into Valdagno di Trento, and in 1948 into Valdagno: a name that belongs to another town, in another region, and has nothing to do with this plateau. Only in 1955 did the comune receive the name it bears today, Aldino. Almost thirty years with a borrowed name. The language, meanwhile, did not move: the population is almost entirely German-speaking, and the inhabitants are still sometimes called Hessen, a term for German speakers not of Bavarian origin.

The territory is cut in two by the deep gorge of the Bletterbach, which separates the hamlet of Redagno from the rest of the comune; to the east rise the twin peaks of the Corno Bianco and the Corno Nero, divided by the Oclini pass. The coat of arms, granted in 1969, puts precisely this into pictures: in the upper part two blue quarter-circles on a silver ground, which are the Corno Bianco; in the lower part a shortened white cross of Saint Andrew, standing for the four original hamlets, on a red that is the colour of the porphyry mountain. The village museum, on the other hand, was born by chance: in 1989 the provincial conservator, visiting, noticed the value of the objects kept in the church and the chapel, cataloguing was begun and the museum opened on 26 May 1990; in 2024 it was completely rearranged.
