Altavalle

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 1,640 · Postal code: 38092

Altavalle is a new comune: it has existed since 1 January 2016, when the territories of Faver, Grauno, Grumes and Valda merged into one, with the council seat at Faver. The name chosen keeps none of the four: it says only where it is, that is high up in the Cembra valley. It is a scattered comune, and the first acts of its life are, inevitably, administrative: the new postcode came into force on 18 April 2016 in place of the old one, and the coat of arms and gonfalon were approved only on 15 June 2018, two and a half years after the comune had already come into being. Until then it existed without having an image of itself.

What the four villages brought with them, on the other hand, can be seen on the ground: five churches for little more than sixteen hundred inhabitants, each at the centre of a village that until 2016 governed itself. There is the church of Saints Philip and James at Faver, that of the Conversion of Saint Paul at Valda, Santa Lucia at Grumes, San Martino at Grauno and the Madonna di Caravaggio at the Masi di Grumes. It is the map of how things stood before: four bell towers and a fifth for a group of farmsteads, each with its own saint and its own feast. The history of Altavalle, for now, is still the sum of four histories: that of the comune has yet to begin.
