The plateau governed itself for centuries: the Magnifica Comunità Pinetana, born in 1253 within the boundaries of the old pieve, jealously defended its liberty against feudal institutions and was dissolved only in 1875, when the comuni of Baselga, Miola and Bedollo were created out of its lands — and Miola came back into Baselga with the merger of 1928. The same character shows in the story of the castle of Belvedere: its lords vanish from the records around the middle of the thirteenth century, and it seems the castle was destroyed by a revolt of the people of Piné; today only a few ruins are left at Dos de la Mot. In 1525 the village joined the peasants' rising.

From the thirteenth century the plateau filled with Bavarian and Tyrolean peasants who came to clear the woods, and their words have stayed in the place names — Puel, Walt, Erla, Laite, Rauta, Postel, Clinga — and in a number of surnames. In 1537 the German-speaking community asked for a priest who spoke its language, and got one, Nicolaus von Neuhaus. The colony kept its customs and its language for some four centuries before being absorbed by the Romance-speaking population around it; and the German habit of living in isolated farmsteads gave way to houses built one against the other.
