Campitello di Fassa

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 737 · Postal code: 38031

At the end of October 2018 the storm Vaia brought down the woods of Campitello: it is reckoned that twelve years of timber were lost, while Canazei, just next door and larger, lost little more than one. That is how the wind chooses.

The village is Ladin, one of the eighteen of the Ladinia, and the cazèt variety of Fassa Ladin is spoken here. At the end of the nineteenth century it was one of the best-known alpine resorts in the Alps, not only in Trentino: the pioneers of climbing came here, and the geologists who studied the peaks around, from the Sassolungo to the Marmolada. The church of Saints Philip and James is named in a document of 1245, but the building you see is of 1525.
