Saint John the Baptist in the Fassa Valley
📅 Every year, on 24 June
San Giovanni di Fassa celebrates Saint John the Baptist on 24 June, in the church dedicated to him.
The municipality was born on the first of January 2018 from the merger of Pozza di Fassa and Vigo di Fassa, approved by a referendum on the twentieth of November 2016. The name chosen at first was Sèn Jan di Fassa, half Ladin and half Italian; on the seventh of December 2018 the Constitutional Court declared that mixed form illegitimate, and the municipality became San Giovanni di Fassa. In 2021 the banner too was modified to carry the full name. Very few Italian municipalities have had their own name annulled by the Constitutional Court.
The language, meanwhile, has stayed: in the valley people speak the brach variety of Fassan, one of the forms of Dolomitic Ladin. The municipality is a scattered one, that is, it has no single centre but a string of villages, and each has kept its own church: the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist at San Giovanni, San Giovanni Nepomuceno at Vallonga, San Lorenzo at Pera, San Nicolò at Pozza, where the town hall stands, and Santa Giuliana at Vigo. The village is on the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
