Denno

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 1,252 · Postal code: 38010

The village was called Enno; the d in front is a preposition that stayed stuck to the name, which comes from the pre-Latin word Enna, the same that gave Egna. From the village the De Enno family took its name, and at the beginning of the thirteenth century it was probably the most powerful in the Val di Non. From one of its branches came the Madruzzo: between 1539 and 1658 they gave Trento four prince-bishops.

Between 1612 and 1615, during the witch hunt in the Val di Non, the inquisitors questioned many women here too. Of three of them the nicknames remain: la Tronella of Quetta, la Tuenetta and la Grill of Toss. Maria known as la Grill was shut in Castel Coredo and condemned to death in January 1614. In 1632, instead, the carta di regola was written: fifty-five chapters saying how life was to be lived.
