Madruzzo

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 2,783 · Postal code: 38076

Madruzzo as a village does not exist: it is the name of a castle, and of the house of the local prince-bishops who held that castle. The comune, on the other hand, has been made twice. The first time in 1928, when a royal decree of the seventh of June merged the two comuni of Calavino and Lasino; in 1953 the two separated again, each going back to being itself; and on the first of January 2016 they merged a second time, taking up the same name again. The town hall is at Lasino. So this is a comune born twice and undone once, which has never taken the name of either of the two villages that compose it.

The coat of arms is recent as well, approved in 2017, and it shows the profile of a tower: that of Gumpone, which belonged to the house of the local prince-bishops and which from the top of a crag dominates the valley of Cavedine, crowned with Guelph merlons. The comune is a scattered one, with its parishes at Calavino, Lasino, Sarche and Pergolese, each with its own church, plus two country churches: San Siro above Lasino and that of Saints Maurus, Gratus and Jocundus near Calavino. In the territory the Sarca torrent has cut for some kilometres the canyon of Limarò, a gorge with vertical walls; higher up lies the little lake of Lagolo.
