Feast of Maria Addolorata
📅 Every year, on the third Sunday of September
On the third Sunday of September Sporminore, a municipality of 714 inhabitants in the province of Trento, celebrates its patroness Maria Addolorata.
In May 1525 the peasants here took up arms and attacked the castles: not over religion, but over hunger. The bishop fled from Trento to Riva. In September the troops of the count of Tyrol and of the bishop arrived, and on the twenty-first, at Sporminore, they read out the sentence: swear loyalty, hand over all weapons by the next day, five hundred florins in fines and twenty-five soldiers garrisoned in the castle.
The subjects were also stripped of the right to send their representatives to the diets of Tyrol, while remaining bound to carry out what was decided there. For almost five hundred years, until 1803, this jurisdiction was an enclave of Tyrol inside the prince-bishopric of Trento. In the parish church there is a canvas by Maximilian Pirner which, tradition says, was a gift from the empress Sissi.
