Novella

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 3,664 · Postal code: 38021

Novella is one of the youngest comuni in Italy: it was born on the first of January 2020 from the merger of five villages, Brez, Cagnò, Cloz, Revò and Romallo, and it is a scattered comune, with no real chief town, the council seat being at Revò. Its name belongs to none of the five: it is the name of the stream that runs below some of them and washes part of the boundary. A coat of arms, for the moment, it does not have.

What the five villages bring together is a surprising density of noble buildings: in Arsio alone there are four — Castel San Giovanni, Castel Sant'Anna, Castel Freieck and the Arzberg Freihaus — and then there are Casa Campia and Castel del Pez at Revò, Palazzo Ruffini at Brez, the Ciastelaz at Cagnò and the hermitage of San Biagio at Romallo. At Cloz the two churches are still told apart as the one of the Villa di dentro and the one of the Villa di fuori. And the newest thing about this comune is also the oldest: in the census of 2021 nine hundred and seventy-seven people, more than a quarter of the residents, declared themselves as belonging to the Ladin linguistic group.
