Livo

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 887 · Postal code: 38020

Livo gave its name to a family that rose far higher than the village: in 1183 prince-bishop Salomone granted the fief to Arnoldo and Anselmo of the Livo, whose branch later took the name Kronmetz and became vassals of the counts of Tyrol. Of their Castel Zoccolo, named in 1233 as castro Zochulli, a few stones survive inside an abandoned farm building.

The village centre was gutted by fire on 11 December 1880; a marble slab at the foot of the wooden crucifix, on the corner of the square before the church of San Martino, recorded in 1209, keeps the date. The present borders are recent: Bresimo and Cis, annexed between the wars, became municipalities again in 1948, while Preghena stayed. A quarter of the residents declare themselves Ladin.
