Terragnolo

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 755 · Postal code: 38060

The name, the legend says, was given by Attila: passing through here he is supposed to have said «terram hanc nolo», this land I do not want, and gone on. In Cimbrian the valley is Laimtal, because in the thirteenth century the prince-bishops of Trento sent German colonists to clear it; the name Terregnolo is first read in a document of 1263.

In the nineteenth century Terragnolo was the municipality in Trentino worst hit by pellagra, the disease of those who eat nothing but maize, and the Rovereto physician Guido de Probizer came to fight it here. In 1915, when war was declared, the valley was emptied: the people ended up in the camp of Mitterndorf, in Lower Austria, and more than four hundred and fifty of them died there, among them over one hundred and sixty children under five.
