Caprese Michelangelo

Province: Arezzo · Region: Tuscany · Population: 1,516 · Postal code: 52033

On 6 March 1475 Michelangelo Buonarroti was born here, and was baptised in the church of San Giovanni Battista. Then the village went back to being what it was, and the castle emptied: for centuries the records describe it as ruined and uninhabited. What put it back on its feet was a document. In the second half of the eighteen hundreds Michelangelo's birth record came to light, and from that came the restorations and the first Michelangelo museum, today the Museo Casa Natale. The name of the municipality has been his since 1913.

The coat of arms is split in two, and the two halves are almost six centuries apart. The first is from 1324: a silver goat rearing up the trunk of an oak to eat its leaves, adopted when Caprese, after a long siege, submitted to Guido Tarlati, bishop of Arezzo, and replacing the arms of the counts of Romena, who had held the Singerna valley for sixty years. The second half, taken from the Buonarroti blazon, was added in 1913 along with the name. The local crop is the sweet chestnut, which since 2010 has carried a protected designation of origin.
