Pieve Santo Stefano

Province: Arezzo · Region: Tuscany · Population: 3,190 · Postal code: 52036

The old name, Suppetia, is traced to the Latin suppeditare, to supply: the Roman settlement at the meeting of the Tiber and the Ancione was there to send down to Rome, floating on the river, the timber of the Massa Trabaria; the basins for floating it, which Pliny the Elder names, still have their foundations at the bridges of Valsavignone and Formole. Another explanation comes from a stone unearthed in 1636, which said that Publius Sulpicius and his wife Cellina had built there a temple to the god of the Tiber and his nymphs.

Since 1984 the town has kept the national archive of diaries, which Saverio Tutino came here to found: more than ten thousand diaries, memoirs and bundles of letters, written by ordinary people. Every year the Premio Pieve is awarded, and since 2013, in the palazzo Pretorio, there is the little museum of the diary.
