Chiusi della Verna

Province: Arezzo · Region: Tuscany · Population: 2,058 · Postal code: 52010

The mountain of the Verna was a count's gift: Orlando di Catenaia, who had met Francis of Assisi in the castle of San Leo and made over the mountain to him in 1213. Francis came back several times, and in 1224 he received the stigmata there; where his hut of branches stood, the countess Caterina Tarlati had a chapel built.

It is the highest municipality in Tuscany, and the via Romea passed through it, the road of the pilgrims coming down from the Brenner to Rome: along the Corsalone stretches of medieval paving can still be seen, and it is known where the hospices that lodged them stood. During the German occupation two farmers of Giampereta, Francesco and Emilia Ciuccoli, hid a Jewish family from Florence for a year: in 2002 they were recognised as righteous among the nations.
