Londa

Province: Florence · Region: Tuscany · Population: 1,827 · Postal code: 50060

The village was first called Isola, the island, because it lay shut in between two torrents that then ran on different beds; later Onda, wave, and in 1028 it is written Unda. The golden wave has stayed on the coat of arms. Of the Etruscan past a stele remains, found here and now in Florence, and so do the names of the hamlets: Rata, Rincine, Vicorati, Vierle.

Under fascism Londa made the national papers: the fascist mayor, who had been a squadrista and had marched on Rome, was killed by a communist from Rincine while work was going on for the new road. The regime raised a memorial stone to him, which was taken down at the Liberation: its traces can still be seen. On 27 August 1944 the Germans found three Jewish women in the woods and killed them, in the place called Le Vigne.
