Feast of the Madonna delle Calle
📅 Every year, on the Tuesday after Easter
On the Tuesday after Easter Montemignaio, a municipality of 576 inhabitants in the province of Arezzo, celebrates its patroness the Madonna delle Calle.
In 1860, when the plebiscite was held for the annexation of Tuscany to the Kingdom of Sardinia, the yes votes at Montemignaio were 120 out of 598 entitled to vote: not a majority. It is the sign, local history says, of how warily annexation was regarded here.
The village stands on the mountains that divide the Casentino from the Valdarno. Above the houses is Castel Leone, and in the village the pieve of Santa Maria Assunta, with the oratory of the Madonna delle Calle a little outside. Today more than one inhabitant in ten was born abroad, the largest community being the Romanian one.
