Pratovecchio Stia

Province: Arezzo · Region: Tuscany · Population: 6,011 · Postal code: 52015

The comune was born on 1 January 2014 from the merger of Pratovecchio and Stia, after the referendum of the previous October: at Pratovecchio more than three voters in four said yes, at Stia more than eight in ten; the arms came in 2015. The oldest piece of the territory is at Romena, where the pieve of San Pietro was built in the middle of the 12th century over an earlier building, perhaps of the 8th: the capitals inside carry the date 1152, and beside it stands the late Romanesque baptistery. In the castle of Romena Dante Alighieri spent part of his exile; the castle was destroyed in 1440 by Niccolò Piccinino's Milanese troops, then restored under the Grand Duchy, and damaged again by Allied bombing in the last war.

In the church of the monastery of San Giovanni Evangelista, founded in 1134, there is an Assumption of the mid-15th century whose author is unknown: art historians call him the Master of Pratovecchio, taking the name of the village because they have no other. On the nearby altar, a Coronation of the Virgin by Giovanni Bizzelli, of 1600. At Poppiena the church of Santa Maria is documented from 1099, with a rose window on the front and alabaster mullioned windows in the apse. From here came also Dono di Paolo, barber and surgeon, who moved to Florence and became a citizen there in 1373: his son is the painter Paolo Uccello.
