Masaccio's first painting is here: the triptych of San Giovenale, dated 1422, which the painter made when he was barely twenty for the church at Cascia, and which today can be seen in the museum next to the parish church, a few steps from where it has always been.
Higher up, in the woods of the Pratomagno, stands Vallombrosa: the abbey that grew after Giovanni Gualberto withdrew up there with a few companions in 1036, and the reserve where the tallest tree in Italy grows. Down in the valley, at Leccio, the castle of Sammezzano is the most extravagant piece of orientalist architecture in Italy — but it is private and cannot be visited. There are 16,076 residents.
